Last week I mentioned that Justin Jefferson was about to pass Cooper Kupp for the lead in the All-Time FGW Ranks. Then, something happened that we did no expect…

Let’s freak out for a second.

What if Cooper Kupp is done for the season? With the way that the injuries have gone with fellow (albeit older) receivers Keenan Allen and Michael Thomas, it’s not too hard to imagine a scenario where Kupp’s usefulness for 2022 has come to an end.

Kupp’s FGW for 2022 currently sits at 1.0. If he misses the rest of the fantasy regular season he’ll be at around 0.85, if you assume a -0.03 “replacement” factor.

Last year, an FGW of 0.85 would have landed Kupp in a tie with Joe Mixon for 11th overall after 15 weeks:

I realized this week that “Fantasy Games Won”, as I conceived it, is really a regular season metric. The original logic for coming up with it went like this:

Points are an incomplete measure of fantasy success, because not all points are scored have an equal impact on your chances of winning. What matters is your chances of winning.
You can calculate the impact a player has on your chances of winning games, and track that across a full season instead.

I was missing the logical conclusion to this train of thought:

Regular season wins only matter insofar as they increase your chances of winning a championship.

While everyone was cleaning up mountains of wrapping paper and tissue paper in order to have a tidy New Year’s Eve, I left the tissue paper for the dog to eat and focused on cleaning up the FGW metric in order to have a tidy playoff calculation.

Like the aforementioned wrapping paper, however, I ended up taking an aspect of the metric that needs attention, made a pile, and shoved it in the garage.

Week 11, by the numbers, was by far the craziest week of the season so far (in my opinion). Fireworks included:

The biggest week of the year so far (Jonathan Taylor).
2 players (Taylor and Austin Ekeler) above the 0.40 FGW mark – when we only had 4 from weeks 1-10.
The 2 worst single-week FGW performances of the year so far (Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes).
A new overall leader (Taylor).
AND, I figured out the running issue I’ve been having with kickers and defense!
